Disk 22-36-114 / SNES ROM HACK
A voodoo platformer tribute for Monkey Island’s 35th anniversary

Bild

Ahoy, pirates and pixel-loving adventurers!
I’m an indie developer on a mission to revive the magic of the '90s by creating completely free games for the legendary Super Nintendo (SNES). And to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Monkey Island, I’m working on something special: Disk 22-36-114, a voodoo-infused platformer inspired by the mythical Disk 22 — the legendary joke that drove fans wild back in the day!
Remember that mysterious floppy that never actually existed? I’ve decided to make it real. This game is a cheeky, nostalgic tribute packed with:
Environmental puzzles and acrobatic jumps
Voodoo magic and deep-cut references

A nimble Guybrush (scaled to SNES limits: 16x32 pixels!)

Chapter 1: SNES ROM – Disk 22
Guybrush finds himself beneath Melee Island, navigating eerie catacombs filled with skeletons and skulls. The atmosphere pays homage to Indiana Jones, with cryptic puzzles, ancient traps, and nods to the iconic “three trials.” It’s a dark, mysterious descent where wit and bravery are key to survival.

Chapter 2: SNES ROM – Disk 36
Back on the surface, Guybrush faces off against the island’s sheriff in a wild chase that spans every corner of Melee. The duel unfolds in the most unexpected places, turning familiar settings into chaotic battlegrounds. This chapter amps up the action and humor, with fast-paced twists and unconventional showdowns.

Chapter 3: SNES ROM – Disk 114
To escape arrest, Guybrush discovers a mysterious gray door—one he’s never dared to open—located to the left of the clock tower scene. Stepping through, he enters the world of LOOM, where he must confront the powerful entity known as Chaos. It’s a bold crossover that merges two legendary LucasArts worlds in an epic final act.

It’s a surreal pursuit through traps, voodoo, and... municipal regulations.
The game will be 100% free and playable on SNES hardware.
I’ll be sharing screenshots and gameplay details soon.
Stay tuned, mates. The legend of Disk 22 is finally coming to life.

Working on SNES hacks has been surprisingly convenient and rewarding. The platform is well-documented, and there's a passionate community that has developed great tools for modding and expanding original titles. Technically, the SNES strikes a nice balance — it's approachable enough for creative experimentation, yet complex enough to offer meaningful design and programming challenges. For me, it's the perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation.

Interesting, I have no experience with SNES hacks whatsoever besides some rom hacks for ALTTP, which is probably an entirely different thing. I'm really excited in how this will turn out.

I'm curious to see how the final result turns out too! SNES projects can be incredibly creative and full of surprises. :D

Hi everyone! Just wanted to reassure you that my game is going really well.
The reason I haven’t posted anything on the topic lately is because I’m finishing up another project I had already started.
I’m not absent — as soon as I wrap that up, I’ll share all the updates on the new game.
Thanks for your patience and see you soon!

Here I am again, mateys!

I’ve decided that Disks 22, 36, and 114 will focus entirely on Melee Island.
No more Loom and no more Indiana Jones catacombs: I cut them out because they needed too many dialogues to explain the story, and on the SNES that just wouldn’t work well.
Better to keep everything centered on Melee, where pirate humor shines without long conversations.
So, what happens at the start of the game? The player will insert all the floppy disks using pure imagination, simply pressing the gamepad buttons as if they were playing a badly tuned accordion.
Guybrush will re-emerge to the surface after wandering through a dark path with no exit, finding absolutely nothing.
And when he finally climbs back up, he runs into the sheriff...
That’s when the gameplay begins. Besides the sheriff as the main antagonist, there will also be generic pirates ordered to capture him. Of course, they’ll be so generic that their names will be “Pirate #1,” “Pirate #2,” and “Pirate #3,” spending more time arguing over who stole the last grog than actually chasing Guybrush.

Only those who answer this question may enter the game… the rest will be left outside polishing a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle!

Not like that time at the Governor’s mansion, which felt more like a school play directed by Stan: paintings crashing down on their own, red buttons to press without knowing if they opened secret passages or just blew up the buffet, and everything else happening backstage like an episode of Monkey Mysteries! This time no curtains, no puppet‑show sound effects: it’s a real duel, face to face, Guybrush versus LeChuck… with plenty of menacing mustaches! Sharpen your witty comebacks, polish those pixelated swords, and don’t forget the chicken with a pulley in the middle: the show is about to begin!

I just wanted to share a little update about my Monkey Island setup: I’ve decided to switch from EGA to VGA.

Why the change?

VGA simply looks better on the SNES, with richer colors and sharper details that make the atmosphere even more immersive.

Plus, the floppy I added represents the Chapter Introduction!

We’re almost there! The game is really starting to take shape, and if everything goes as planned I should have it ready by Christmas… consider it my gift to you!

The GIF I’ve attached clearly shows Guybrush’s size: I captured it pixel by pixel from the original game, keeping the exact same spacing that was used back then. I’ve applied the same principle even when Guybrush appears farther away in perspective, so the proportions remain faithful to the source.

My goal is to make the experience feel as authentic as possible: from the point‑and‑click mechanics to the SNES vibe, I want every scene to look like it could have been part of the original game all along.

Get ready to relive Monkey Island with the same magic as before, but with a fresh twist that stays true to its roots!

True, it’s SNES-only. Since I’m working solo I focused on that platform, but the good news is SNES games are super easy to emulate on PC, mobile, and more. :)
